Behind the Scenes
Dear Reader:
As most of you probably know, I love to do hands-on research for my stories. I’ve ridden fire trucks to fires and medical calls, I’ve followed around our district attorney and the federal public defender, I’ve interviewed FBI and Secret Service Agents and had someone teach me how to create a rolling chasse for a book which featured a racecar driver hero. This time around, in preparation for writing about the twins in this book, I borrowed a baby for a day. A former student of mine and member of my church has a little boy who was at the time I wrote BE MY BABIES an eight month old. Little Patrick Hoff came to visit me for a whole day so I could recall what it was like having a baby around. (My own babies are 26 and 23.)
We had a wonderful time together. What you’ll see in this book is what Patrick did: his babbling, the fact that he could hold his bottle, how he pumped his chubby arms when I fed him, how he played with his feet and tugged his socks off, along with many more details of an infant’s life. I’d forgotten how warm and satisfying it was to hold a baby, sing him to sleep, or even brush my hand down his wispy hair. You’re in for a treat when you read about him and check my website for pictures.
And you’ll love reading about Simon and Lily just as much. They’re great with kids, and great with each other, even if it does take them the whole book to realize the latter. I truly admired Lily for her courage and loyalty, and Simon for his steadfastness and integrity. It was heart-warming to me to see their blossoming romance unfold. I hope it is for you, too.

Kathryn Shay
Dedication:
To Patrick Hoff. May you grow up to be the kind of hero in this book.
